Rodney Saulwick
Artist and Designer.

Extract. I work as a freelance Artist, Consultant, Calligrapher, Graphic Designer and Teacher. I operate both individually and in partnership with my wife Jenny; Sculptor, Community and Urban Artist, Textile Artist and Teacher, through Saulwick Art and Design, a business we run from our studio in Belgrave, Victoria, Australia.

Qualifications. Education Scotch College, Melbourne.
Certificate of Art (RMTC) 1950 and Dip. Adv. Art (ARMTC) 1952.

Range of technical expertise, Analogue. My work as an Artist and Designer has covered an extensive range both in methods and application incorporating Graphic Design, Architectural Rendering, Illustration, Typography, Lettering, Calligraphy, Finished art, Air Brush, using traditional art and design materials including inks, paints, markers, transfer products, etc. and both 35 mm and 2 1/4" black and white and colour photography, utilising both an SLR Pentax and Rollie.
Range of technical expertise, Digital. My range of experience in this area includes the production of artwork for print, the creation of websites, and the production of interactive multimedia using the latest digital equipment. Software includes PageMaker, Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, Director, Access, Excell and Word for Windows, etc. Hardware includes laser printers, A3 colour printer, digital camera, scanner and other appropriate electronic equipment. I work on Pentium PC's with access to Mac's.
Range of professional experience. Over 40 years in my capacity as a Designer I have been involved in campaign research and planning (National and State), corporate planning and design, television commercials, print consultant and supervision, and client contact. As an Art Director I have had considerable experience in researching resources, briefing and working with professional printers, photographers, artists, designers, copy writers, crafts people, models, trade houses, typesetters, engravers, software programmers and clients.
My graphic work has included designing symbols, corporate logos, brochures, packaging, advertisements, posters, in-house material, letterheads, record covers, swing tags, exhibition displays, book covers, wine labels, annual reports, plaques, web sites, etc.
Range of general experience. In my capacity as a teacher I have taught drawing, painting, sculpture and graphics with the Ministry of Education; worked as a consultant and part time instructor responsible for tuition in art and design with Stotts Correspondence College and since 1986 I have written, designed and tutored courses in calligraphy at Monash University, Adult Education in Horsham, Community houses in Emerald and Kallista and the Council of Adult Education (CAE).

1986-97. Calligraphy and Handwriting Tutor, Council of Adult Education (CAE), ongoing. This position entails the writing, designing and tutoring of various courses and workshops in calligraphy to a wide range of students of diverse educational, social and economic backgrounds.
1973-76. Consultant Graphic Designer, Keith Gray and Associates, Melbourne. Involved in research, corporate and typographic design, art direction, packaging, photography and illustration.
1972-73. Consultant and part time Instructor, Stotts Correspondence College, Melbourne. Instruction in general art and design through the correspondence system.
1965-73. Art Director and Designer, Hayes Advertising P/L, Melbourne. Involved in corporate design, campaign planning, illustration, typographic design and graphics.

Collaborative projects. In 1996 I worked collaboratively and in consultation with my partner, Jenny and the Dingley Village Chamber of Commerce for the design development proposals for the Dingley Village shopping centre verandahs, facias, signage and trade directory.
In 1996, I designed the Placemaking Information Kit jointly with my partner, Jenny. Working for the Dingley Village Neighbourhood Centre and community. This advocacy kit developed a local community easily accessible 'How to do Placemaking' kit.
In 1995, I designed and produced 'Fresco', a 'growing sculpture' in collaboration with my partner for the City of Greater Dandenong.
In 1995, I collaborated with Jenny to design and fabricate an environmental gateway for Elmhurst Park, City of Hume, and also in collaborated with Jenny, a concept and design system for a signage project for the Dingley Village Shopping Centre.
In 1993 I designed a Community Art advocacy brochure with my partner for the Community Use Sculpture Project, Amphitheatres and Murals, Emerald Lake Park, Victoria.
During 1989 and 1990 I acted as a graphic and technical consultant for a Local Government Arts Project collaboratively designed and constructed by Sculptor and Urban Artist, Jenny Saulwick. This $185 000 project was funded by the City of Malvern, the Bicentennial Authority, the Victorian Ministry for the Arts and private sponsors. This project entailed the design and construction of a colonnade of twenty cast concrete columns, balustrades and walls within the Northbrook Art Garden, Malvern, Victoria.
During 1984 and 1985 I acted as a graphic and technical consultant to a CEP Community Arts Project designed and organised by Jenny. This $167 000 Community Use Sculpture Project at Emerald Lake Park, Emerald, Victoria was funded by the Community Employment Program (CEP), The Victorian Ministry for the Arts, The Community Arts Board of the Australia Council and the Shire of Sherbrooke. The project entailed the designing and construction of five earth amphitheatres and six cast concrete 'bas relief' mural sculptures.
Special project. In 1983, I designed and illustrated a series of children's books in conjunction with Dorothy Rickards, BA (Melb) TSTC ASDA Prel Cert ALA, lecturer in drama and puppetry, writer and designer of children's books, scripts and radio plays, and Naomi Tippett, Dip Adv Art (RMIT), director of the Creative School Holiday Club and Polyglot Puppets. This project, published and distributed in Australia and endorsed by the Victorian Department of Youth, Sport and Recreation, is called 'Planning for Play' and consists of 5 books forming a resource of children's activities.
General project. In 1974 I spent a short time working on the premises of the now departed weekly newspapers, 'The Living Daylights' and 'Nation Review' as a design consultant and illustrator.
Calligraphic project. In 1982 I was commissioned to produce a calligraphic presentation to Queen Elizabeth in commemoration of her opening of the Australian National Gallery, Canberra.

Artist in residencies. During 1987 I was an Artist in Residence at Cockatoo Primary School, Cockatoo, Victoria; another Artists in Schools (AIS) Program funded co-jointly by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry for the Arts. This project in which I worked as a Calligrapher, was the first time that a Calligraphic artist and designer had been employed in a school.
In 1984 I worked as an Artist in Residence at the Community Language/Bilingual Materials Development Workshop, Marysville, Victoria. This was administered by the Multicultural and Migrant Education department and funded by the Ministry of Education. My role was to assist teachers to develop visual material for class sets to be used in the teaching process with students of different cultural backgrounds. I interpreted, designed and illustrated the material.
In 1984 I worked as an Artist in Residence at Upwey High School, Upwey, Victoria; an Artists in Schools (AIS) Program funded co-jointly by the then Department of Education and the Ministry for the Arts. My program was the first time that a Graphic Designer had been employed in this unique scheme. This program enables the members of the school community to experience the work, processes and personality of a professional artist working in the school environment.
Visiting lectureships. During May 1988 I was a visiting lecturer at the Victorian Box Hill College of TAFE where I gave Lectures on 'The History of Writing' and Workshops on 'Writing as Art' to students from the Art and Design faculty. In 1985 I was a visiting lecturer to the Victorian College of Advanced Education on the art and use of the air brush.
Workshops. Since January 1988 I have conducted workshops in calligraphy, and workshops in the art of Handwriting since 1993, for the Council of Adult Education (CAE), Melbourne, Victoria.
Master Class workshops. Since 1997 I have conducted a series of Master Classes in calligraphy at my studio.
Attendance at international master classes. In July 1988 I attended a Calligraphic workshop with author and international calligrapher, Charles Pearce. Glen Iris, Melbourne, Victoria.
In 1987 I attended a Calligraphic workshop at the College of Advanced Education, Kelvin Grove Campus, Kelvin Grove, Brisbane, Queensland, with English master calligrapher, Donald Jackson.
In August 1984 I attended an advanced residential Calligraphy workshop at the University of New England, Armidale, New South Wales by the international English calligrapher and author Donald Jackson. This program was run for the leading calligraphers in Australia and New Zealand, and subsidised by the Craft Council of Australia.
Special interests. My other interests include politics, mucking about, computers, doodling, camping, and both chess and skiing in which I have achieved some moderate distinction. I have travelled in Australia, Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, France, Spain, Morocco, Algeria, Italy, Yugoslavia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Syria and Jordan.
